PhoneScholar.com Holiday Gift Ideas 1

Here is a special treat for you. For that person who is very hard to buy for and has one of the latest gadgets (iPad, Galaxy Tab, iPhone, Android Phone, etc.) I will be posting various items I think would make great gifts over the next few days. I have included the company website link and the link on Amazon.com where you can purchase it along with the prices (as of today) from each . Some of these I have tried out myself and have given my honest opinion. All of these items I found on Amazon.com with the best price. Of course most of them are also offered on various other websites possibly at a lower cost. My word of advice, if you buy online, make sure it is a reputable website that you can easily return the product to if needed (like Amazon.com). I have also included a video where available of the product to give you an idea of how they work. Hope you enjoy.—Bill

The best Black Friday deals for Android

If you’re looking to snag a new Android phone, now may be the prime time to make your move.

Why? Because of that silly little thing called Black Friday, of course. Some pretty impressive deals are already popping up for Android phones this week, and more sales will be starting as the weekend creeps closer.

Here’s a collection of the best Black Friday Android deals we’ve found so far. Remember: All of these deals require two-year carrier contracts. Some may also involve mail-in rebates. As a general rule, make sure you read the retailer’s fine print before making any final decision.

LG Quantum, HTC Surround and Samsung Focus: BOGO from AT&T starting Friday

Here’s hoping you didn’t choose to adopt early. Not even three weeks after Windows Phone 7 went on sale in the US of A comes this: a buy one, get one free sale christened by Microsoft and AT&T. Starting November 26th (that’s Black Friday, we’ll have you know), sleepy-eyed consumers can drag themselves into their local AT&T store in order to pick up an LG Quantum, HTC Surround or Samsung Focus in BOGO fashion — best of all, you can mix and match, enabling users to snag a Quantum and a Surround (or a Focus) for just $199. Naturally, you’ll still be signing a pair of two-year agreements with Ma Bell, but it’s still the cheapest way to indulge in WP7 for the time being. There’s no telling when the deal will end, but common sense would say to jump in early if you’ve got a hankerin’.

Amazon’s iPhone bar code scanner takes impulse buying to a new level

As if it weren’t already a breeze to spend money on Amazon, the retail giant’s updated Amazon for iPhone app just made it even easier to instantly shell out for wares.

The latest version of Amazon Mobile, 1.2.8, contains a bar code scanner in its search screen. As with bar code scanners in other mobile apps, Amazon Mobile uses your iPhone’s camera to take in a product’s zebra-striped bar code. Amazon’s servers then find a match, and after you select the item, you can sign in to your account to purchase the product on the spot. Read the rest of this entry »

T-Mobile Expands HSPA+ to 8 More Markets

T-Mobile USA has expanded its HSPA+ footprint to eight new markets and says it’s on pace to cover 200 million people with its upgraded network by the end of the year.

The new markets include Detroit, Mich.; Grand Junction, Colo.; Harlingen, Texas; Lafayette and South Bend, Ind.; Montgomery, Ala.; Roanoke-Lynchburg, Va., and Youngstown, Ohio. T-Mobile now has done HSPA+ upgrades in more than 80 metropolitan areas around the country.

T-Mobile is branding its HSPA+ service as 4G. The company’s chief technology officer, Neville Ray, said earlier this month that the network delivers average download speeds approaching 5Mbps on T-Mobile’s myTouch 4G phone in some cities, with peak speeds of nearly 12Mbps.

The carrier plans to launch dual-carrier HSPA+ sometime next year. The technology’s peak theoretical speeds clock in at 42Mbps, double that of the peak theoretical speeds of T-Mobile’s current HSPA+ deployment.
